Background:
Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. Democracy Reporting International promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions world-wide. DRI works with local civil society organisations, independent state bodies and other stakeholders on advancing key elements of democratic institution-building and the promotion of a democratic culture.
DRI is currently recruiting a part-time Social Media Analyst for its head office in Berlin to support DRI’s projects in the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and Asia. DRI’s work on social media focuses on bringing transparency to online advertising, assessing information pollution, and equipping partners with the tools to monitor and respond to disinformation campaigns as they happen. In this role, you will work with teams in various countries and, in collaboration with the Director of Programmes, design and implement projects that use social media to gain insight into computational propaganda during elections, referendums, and other salient political events.
Your duties and responsibilities:
- Pro-actively design, develop and implement activities to monitor and analyse social media and other open data with a special focus on elections, referendums, hate speech, or political discourse. Draft and disseminate findings
- Contribute to project proposals, reports, publications, trainings and events on social media and policy-making in areas such as elections, referendums, privacy, and surveillance
- Travel to South-East Asia to deliver trainings; occasional travel to conferences and meetings
- Advise DRI’s work on methodologies and standards in social media and other online content
- Identify existing research and methodologies for collecting social media data and adapt these methods to the organisation’s area of work
- Support coordination between Programme Officers, country offices, researchers, academics, or other external experts involved in social media components of projects
- Establish partnerships with social media researchers, academics, technology platforms, or other non-profit groups working on civic tech initiatives
- Contribute to project proposals, reports, publications, trainings and events on social media and policy-making in areas such as elections, referendums, privacy, and surveillance
Qualifications we require:
- University degree in international relations, political science, social sciences, computer science, or related fields
- At least 3-5 years of relevant work experience (experience in the non-profit sector and/or civic tech initiatives or groups is an asset)
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods used in social media research, such as data collection (via Application Programming Interfaces, scraping, etc.) and analytical approaches (coding, content analysis, statistical analysis, etc.)
- Practical experience with tools used to collect social media data, including applications, modules, programming packages, or social listening platforms such as Sysomos, Talkwalker, etc.
- Experience in data retrieval, statistical analysis and visualization (ideally good knowledge of R, Python, or similar)
- Ability to distill complex technical findings into widely understandable conclusions and practical recommendations for non-expert audiences
- Strong oral and written skills and an analytical approach in communications in English; proficiency in German and other languages are an asset.
