Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies, and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.

DRI is operating in Sri Lanka since 2016 and has implemented various democratic strengthening projects with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, the European Union (EU), the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). DRI has worked on the thematic areas of human rights, constitutions, and democratic discourse with a focus on strengthening civil society in their work towards democratic reforms.

DRI is launching the project “Strengthening Reconciliation in Sri Lanka by Supporting Regulatory Framework Reforms on Disinformation and Hate Speech Online and Monitoring Social Media” funded by the GIZ. Part of the project focuses on the analysis and discussion of online discourse on diversity and reconciliation around the 21st of April 2019 Easter Attacks in Sri Lanka, including countering/strengthening narratives.

DRI is currently recruiting full-time Social Media Coders for its Country Office in Sri Lanka. In collaboration with, and under the supervision of the Social Media Analyst, you will be coding social media content scraped from Facebook and Twitter.

Your Tasks:

  • Take part in an introductory training on social media analysis and manual coding;
  • Assist DRI’s Social Media Analyst in manual coding of content of relevant Sri Lankan social media pages;
  • Manually code by interpreting the messages of individual social media posts and comments;
  • Provide narratives, i.e. significant short stories from the data that you code, to be used for illustration in the final report of the project.
  • Other relevant duties, as required.


Your Skills and Experience:

  • University degree in politics, media, law or other relevant fields;
  • Knowledge of ongoing political and social reform debates in Sri Lanka;
  • Strong analytical skills to identify content, abstract data and provide analysis thereof;
  • Profound understanding of the (social) media landscape in Sri Lanka;
  • Eye for details and meticulous working style;
  • Proficiency in key computer applications, such as Excel;
  • Fluency in writing and reading in Sinhala and English and/or Tamil and English;
  • Legal right to work in Sri Lanka;
  • Good communication and negotiation skills;
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team;
