Background:
Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies, and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.
DRI is currently recruiting a full-time Social Media Analyst (Sri Lanka) for its country office in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In collaboration with, and under supervision of the Programme Coordinator, you will conduct social media monitoring, to unveil disinformation, hate speech and other phenomena spread on social media, especially in the context of Sri Lanka’s upcoming elections and around major ongoing political reform projects in the country.
Your Tasks:
- Assess, together with DRI’s HQ Social Media team, programme experts, partners and DRI’s Sri Lanka team the feasibility of the research regarding data access and social media platforms in Sri Lanka, conduct contextual analysis and literature reviews and conceptualize the theory of change to develop the research plan;
- Prepare, code, and monitor the scraping of relevant data during the monitoring period, ensuring data reliability and retention, in close coordination with the coders and programme experts supporting the analysis;
- Develop the classification and coding system of data for relevant research questions and prepare an efficient system for hand-annotation of data in line with DRI’s methodology and guidelines;
- Co-facilitate the social media awareness/literacy workshops and briefings for targeted stakeholders, in cooperation with HQ’s Social Media team, programme experts, partners, DRI’s district and national coordinators, prepare presentations and present the findings and recommendations from DRI’s social media analyses;
- Present DRI work and findings in relation to social media monitoring at DRI sharing sessions and at public events held online and offline;
- Analyse data and produce visualizations to communicate insights, and findings, as well as develop recommendations;
- Produce written reports and collaborate with programme experts to verify the correct depiction of monitoring findings;
- Assist the team with identifying resources for social media analyses and assist in data collection for monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) processes related to the social media analyses activity under various projects and, provide input for communications as requested;
- Assist in tasks such as follow up and approval of deliverables and ToRs of contracts of service contract providers and other related admin tasks as requested;
- Take part in trainings to further skills related to the role as social media analyst as requested by senior management;
- Other relevant duties, as required in line with DRI ways of working.
Your Skills and Experience:
Required:
- University degree in IT/ICT or other relevant fields;
- At least 2 years of experience in social media monitoring using open source or private social listening tools;
- Demonstrated expertise in a programming language or other tools for data analysis and data visualization (such as R, Python, or Tableau);
- Knowledge of the (social) media landscape and pages of political/social/religious influencers in Sri Lanka;
- Demonstrated experience of building the capacity of civil society or other actors on ICT topics;
- Relevant publications on the influence of social media in politics will be considered an asset;
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Sinhala and/or Tamil.
Preferred:
- Relevant professional experience in political analysis of democratic reforms including around elections or post war transitional processes will be considered an asset.
