Background:
Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organization registered in Berlin. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.
DRI is implementing ‘re:constitution: Exchange and Analysis on Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe’, a programme aimed at facilitating a fact-based debate around topical questions on the rule of law across Europe, by providing user-friendly, up-to-date analyses.
To expand its research and analysis capability, DRI is looking for a full-time Research Officer for its head office in Berlin. This position is subject to expected approval of funding.
You Tasks
- Monitor legal and political developments related to the rule of law in EU member states, such as topical debates, legal reforms, landmark court cases or administrative proceedings;
- Suggest thematic areas for deeper research and reporting;
- Draft, review, finalise, and conceptualise diverse project outputs: analytical pieces, explainers, fact sheets, infographics, short videos, etc.;
- Work with our Communications Team on shaping project outputs and delivering them to target audiences;
- Engage with the programme partner on joint activities;
- Give interviews to journalists, represent DRI at meetings, seminars and conferences;
- Be ready to travel, in exceptional cases also on weekends.
- Support the Manager Europe and contribute to the broader work of the programme team as required.
Your skills and experience
- Postgraduate degree in law with a focus on constitutional law/public law;
- Knowledge on the state of the rule of law in the EU;
- At least 3 years of experience in research on constitutional law/public law;
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly, accurately and quickly for non-expert audiences;
- Capability to work independently and under tight deadlines;
- Strong organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written) and attention to detail;
- Fluency in English;
- Proficient IT skills.
- Previous work with media is an asset;
- Experience with professional use of Twitter;
- Experience with quantitative data (indicators, surveys) and/or working with data visualization (maps, infographics) is a distinct asset;
- Fluency in other EU languages, with knowledge of French as a distinct asset.
