With funding from the German Foreign Office, Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) are implementing a project “Strengthening political pluralism in Georgia – Phase II”. The aim of the project is foster an impartial facts-based debate on extreme political polarisation among Georgian civil society, media and the wider public.
As part of its efforts, DRI is organising a series of workshops/trainings for Georgian media: ‘How do we talk about politics? Fact-checking polarised messages’. The aim is to discuss the causes and consequences of extreme polarisation of Georgia’s politics from the media perspective, as well as to deliberate about the strategies and tools that journalists and media professionals can employ to reduce it.
Description of assignment and responsibilities
The project is currently seeking the services of a qualified senior media expert to support the design and implementation of the media workshops. The expert is expected to:
- Work with DRI’s Project Coordinator/Political Advisor in Georgia, DRI HQ and GYLA to develop the concept and programme of one-day workshops for journalists and media professionals focusing on ‘Political Polarisation and the Media: Fact-checking Polarised Politics”. Background information on the project findings and relevant reports will be provided to the expert at the start of the assignment.
- Conduct three training sessions in regional centres in Georgia.
- Provide DRI with a report on the key findings and takeaways from the assignment and recommendations for future action.
Qualifications
- At least BA degree from journalism, communication or related field
- At least 10 years of proven experience in media and journalism. Experience in developing and delivering media trainings on topics relevant to the project (political pluralism, political polarisation, media coverage of politics) is a significant asset.
- Good knowledge and understanding of Georgia’s political context
- Demonstrated political awareness and analytical skills
- A good network of media contacts in the regions of Georgia is an asset
- Proven presentation skills
- Fluency in English and Georgian
Duration of the assignment
The expert will be contracted for the period from 1 to 30 November 2017. The working days will include home-based desk work and mission days in the training locations (7 working days maximum).
Deliverables and indicative timelines
An indicative timeline for the assignment is provided in the table below, however, it is subject to change based on planning and consultation with DRI and GYLA:
