Background
Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin, Germany. Since 2010, DRI has supported Pakistan’s state institutions in electoral, parliamentary and human rights reforms. DRI is looking for self-motivated young professionals to support the work of the National Commission for Human Rights and the Sindh Human Rights Commission. This is a paid fellowship affording young professionals the opportunity to gain experience in the field of human rights by working within Pakistan’s preeminent human rights institutions.

Duration: Six months (Potential Start Date: 15 September 2017 End Date: 15 February 2018)

Role of the Fellows
The Fellows are expected to work full time with the NCHR and SHRC. Their indicative tasks may include the following:
- Conduct research in consultation with the Commission on human rights issues and implementation of agreed human rights conventions in Pakistan. Support research teams of the Commissions in conducting research on human rights issues;
- Support the Commissions and their staff in reviewing and drafting legislation and policies;
- Support the Commission in drafting and compiling reports on thematic human rights issues;
- Assist other research staff in reviewing human rights legislation at the national and provincial level and correspondence to human rights laws;
- Support in developing press releases and media monitoring activities and visibility of the Commissions;
- Conduct other tasks as may be required by the Commissions.
The above list of tasks is not intended to be exhaustive and Fellows may be expected to perform other functions within the broader scope of the Human Rights Fellowship programme and the Human Rights Institute they work with.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must possess a Master’s degree/16 years of education. Applicants from Baluchistan possessing a Bachelor’s degree/14 years of education will also be eligible given the limited access to higher education. However, preference will be given to higher degree holders;
- Degrees in Law, Political Science, Sociology, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Public Administration, Mass Communications and Human Rights will be accepted;
- 2 to 3 years’ experience of working on human rights advocacy and/or legal/human rights issues is preferred;
- Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3 or equivalent;
- Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Urdu. Knowledge of any other language is an asset;
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent research skills;
- Candidates must be computer literate.
Recruitment Process
All applicants must apply through the Open Testing Service (OTS) website. Candidates satisfying the above-mentioned criteria will be invited for a written screening test. The written test will be followed by interviews and group discussions, with candidates who succeed in the written test and match other criteria mentioned above.
